Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

I tasted two vintages of the eponymous white, the youngest of which was the tender and recently bottled 2021 Quinta da Muradella Blanco, which I suspect might take time to be released while waiting for the complexity this wine has the track record to develop in bottle. This is no longer pure Treixadura, as it now contains 20% Verdello Antiguo (the old clone of Godello) and 5% Dona Blanca. All the whites have a longish élevage, here 15 months with lees in the fermentation vessels, stainless steel for the Treixadura and used foudre for the rest, and then a further year in stainless steel already blended. It has a juicy palate with some baby fat, despite the moderate 12.86% alcohol and the good freshness. It's quite shy and takes time to unfurl subtle notes of dry flowers, herbs and chamomile, with the stony Muradella signature. 2,500 numbered bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023.

Description

If there is a wine that makes you stop for a moment, close your eyes and travel with your senses, this is Muradella Blanco. It is not just any white wine, it is a bottled story, a declaration of love to the Monterrei terroir, in Galicia.
Behind this jewel is José Luis Mateo, a winemaker obsessed with authenticity. His project, Quinta da Muradella, is based on recovering the indigenous varieties and letting them speak without interference. And he succeeds.
Muradella Blanco is born from an unusual but absolutely delicious combination: 75% Treixadura, 20% Verdello Antiguo (a forgotten jewel of the Godello family) and 5% Dona Blanca. The vines, located between 400 and 500 metres above sea level, grow in soils of quartz and clay, which gives the wine a vibrant minerality.

Winemaking

José Luis Mateo is not in a hurry, and this is evident in the way he makes his wines. In Muradella Blanco, each variety is fermented separately: the Treixadura in stainless steel to preserve its freshness, and the other two in used foudres, adding depth and texture. Afterwards, the wine spends 15 months on its lees in the same containers and another year in stainless steel to finish refining. It is a job of patience, of listening carefully to the wine, of knowing how to give it its time.

Taste

At first sip, Muradella Blanco is shy, as if it needed a few seconds to introduce itself. But give it a moment and you will see how it begins to unfold its subtle elegance, with notes of dried flowers, fresh herbs and a whisper of camomile. Its acidity is vibrant, balanced by an enveloping texture, with a finish that leaves a saline and refreshing sensation. It is not a wine of immediate impact, it is one of those that win you over little by little, that make you return to the glass with curiosity, wanting to discover more.
If you like whites with soul, those that evolve in the glass and in the bottle, those that tell stories, Muradella Blanco is for you.
