Description
Mythopia T&T was founded in Switzerland's Valais region as one of those rarities that only come about when a winery chooses to listen to the mountains rather than the market. Behind Mythopia are Romaine and Hans-Peter Schmidt, two winegrowers who realised very early on that a great wine could not come from an over-tamed vineyard, but from a living landscape. On their alpine terraces, tended with profound respect, the vines coexist with insects, wild herbs and genuine biodiversity, as if the wine were meant to spring from an entire ecosystem rather than just a single plot. That is the boldness of Mythopia: to forgo technical convenience and let the land speak for itself. Mythopia T&T is made from Pinot Noir, showcasing a free-spirited, almost untamed expression of this variety in a mountainous setting, characterised by steep slopes, stony soils and a viticultural approach with a strong sense of identity.
Winemaking
Mythopia T&T adheres to an equally radical philosophy: to intervene as little as possible in order to preserve the grape’s original energy. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, without seeking to correct or mask the wine’s character, and the wine is aged in used oak, where it gains depth without being overpowered by the oak. Here, ageing is not intended to add aroma, but rather to refine, tighten and allow the wine to settle. Bottling is carried out unfiltered, keeping the wine’s substance, texture and that slight wildness—which forms part of its personality—intact. Everything in this process seems geared towards a very specific aim: not to produce a polished red, but to preserve a living wine.
Taste
In the glass, Mythopia T&T stands in stark contrast to the typical, approachable and fruity Pinot Noir. The nose offers a deep, spicy profile, with notes of subtle smoke, clove, barely hinted-at dark fruit and a noble oxidative nuance that lends it its uniqueness. On the palate, it is full-bodied, textural and serious, with an enveloping structure and an inner tension that keeps it vibrant. The finish is long, spicy and earthy, with hints of dry woodland and old oak. A red wine for discerning drinkers, more about character than compromise.
