Description
Nestled in the rugged hills of Roussillon, between garrigue scrubland and ancient schist terraces, Domaine Matassa was born almost by intuition. Tom Lubbe, its founder, a New Zealander of South African origin, arrived in Calce in the early 2000s without imagining that he would end up reshaping the canon of natural wine in the south of France. His meeting with Gérard Gauby was decisive: a friendship that opened the doors to the Catalan terroir and gave him the key to explore a new language of wine expression.
Matassa French Disko is a wine that does not respond to formulas: it is born from a single variety, Cinsault, planted at Altura on limestone and friable schist soils, in vines that breathe the north wind and the Mediterranean rigour. It is a tribute to lightness with depth, to lively fruit without compromise. Lubbe has decided to invest in forgotten plots, to work without herbicides or additives, and to vinify with the minimum of intervention, something that two decades ago was seen as an act of rebellion.
Winemaking
The Matassa French Disko grapes are harvested by hand, looking for the right point of freshness, when the acidity is still singing and the alcohol does not exceed the desired lightness. The whole berries are placed in closed tanks for a short carbonic maceration, a technique that preserves the primary fruit and provides a fluid and ethereal profile.
No sulphites or commercial yeasts are added. Fermentation starts spontaneously, with the vineyard's own yeasts. After fermentation, the wine is racked to unlined cement tanks, where it rests for about nine months. Here it is refined without haste, in contact with its lees, gaining texture and cohesion. It is bottled without filtering or fining. Each bottle is a testimony to a vintage, a gesture of absolute trust in nature and in the purity of the fruit.
Taste
As soon as it is poured, Matassa French Disko unfurls a light, almost aerial symphony of wild red fruits: crisp raspberries, sour cherry, and a subtle note of redcurrant that seems to float on a background of Mediterranean herbs and wet stone. Nothing is lush or cloying; on the contrary, the fruit is pure, direct, almost translucent.
On the palate, French Disko glides with refreshing tension, like a finely tuned melody. Its vibrant acidity runs through it like a thread, lifting every nuance and leaving a sense of continuous juiciness. There is no weight or imposed structure, but a rhythm that invites the next sip: plum skin, dried petals, a trace of white spice.
The finish is clean, mineral, with a delicate salinity reminiscent of the proximity of the sea. French Disko does not seek to impose itself, but to accompany; a wine for those who value subtlety, the minimal gesture, the detail. Light but not light, it is an ode to delicacy well understood.
