Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Nackenheim Riesling 1G is deep, pure and complex on the savory and remarkably intense nose that reveals weathered slate as well as ripe, tropical fruit aromas on an iodine bed. Savory, fresh and stimulating on the palate, this full-bodied wine is very mineral, saline and finely grippy, developing a long, intense and powerful yet not alcoholic finish. 12% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

Description
With the Kühling Gillot Nackenheim Riesling Trocken, Carolin Spanier-Gillot and Hans Oliver Spanier realised early on that the Roter Hang brooks no pretence: either you listen to it, or it will run you ragged. They say that, during a harvest when the Rhine was breathing cold dampness down from the heights of Nackenheim, they decided to wait a few more days despite the murmurings of “it’s ready”. It was a bold gamble: they wanted the ripeness of the fruit without losing the mineral edge. From that stubbornness comes this Nackenheim Riesling Trocken, 100% Riesling, a village ambassador under the VDP.AUS ERSTEN LAGEN classification. Here, the soil takes centre stage: Rotliegend (Permianred sandstone and clayey slate) that emerges like a geological scar beside the river, producing a taut, spicy German dry Riesling with that unmistakable salinity of the Roter Hang.
Production
For the Kühling Gillot Nackenheim Riesling Trocken, the grapes come from the finest high-altitude plots above the Rhine, harvested by hand through selective picking. It ferments with indigenous yeasts and is then aged in large traditional Stück and Doppelstück casks, on fine lees, seeking texture and depth without weighing down the fruit. The result is bottled with the identity of its origin intact: a Rheinhessen Riesling of precision, energy and an uncompromising mineral character.
Taste
In Kühling Gillot Nackenheim Riesling Trocken, the colour is pale yellow with brilliant highlights. The nose plants a flag in Nackenheim: nectarine and red apple, but pierced by a sharp herbal edge and a rare, almost exotic spice—hints of red pepper and allspice— againsta stony, smoky and serious backdrop. On the palate, it doesn’t just move: it vibrates. It opens with ripe fruit, yes, but what takes the lead is the spicy minerality of the Rotliegend, with a savoury phenolic edge that provides grip and tension. Acidity that springs forward like a spring and a crisp, long, refreshing finish, leaving the palate clean and crying out for food: Mediterranean fish, creative vegetable dishes, herbs, smoke.
