Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Nierstein Riesling 1G is pure and refined but also intense and mineral on the fruity, aromatic nose that is an excellent ambassador of the famous 'red slope.' Vital and savory on the first palate, this is an elegant, balanced and classical Nierstein Riesling with salivating salinity and piquancy on the finish. This is an expressive terroir wine at a price that is still affordable. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

Features

Description

In Nierstein, where the Rhine widens and the slopes of the Roter Hang appear to be tinged with rust, Kühling Gillot realised long ago that courage does not always mean taking a strong stance: sometimes it means stepping back. When Carolin Spanier-Gillot took the helm of the domaine and steered it — alongside H.O. Spanier—towards organic viticulture (certified since 2004) and, later, biodynamic farming, the decision was not just a slogan: it was a way of walking through the vineyards with one’s hands, accepting the risk and trusting the terroir. The Bodegas Habla favourite anecdote is about straw: tonnes spread each year across the plots to protect the soil and its water, as if tucking up the slope so that summer cannot steal it away.

Kühling Gillot Nierstein Riesling Trocken (100% Riesling) comes from the fine plots of Niersteiner Horst, on stony, porous clay-slate soils that impart that vibrant minerality pulsing beneath it all. In Rheinhessen, the VDP.Erste Lage classification signifies a strictly defined origin and a role as the village’s ‘ambassador’.

Production

For Kühling Gillot Nierstein Riesling Trocken, the grapes are harvested by hand, brought in unhurriedly and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in 2,400-litre Doppelstück barrels, on fine lees, seeking tension rather than embellishment: large oak to breathe, not to impart aroma. Precision reigns supreme in the house philosophy: no shortcuts, minimal intervention, and a clear understanding that time refines the terroir.

Taste

In the glass, Kühling Gillot Nierstein Riesling Trockenis bright yellow, clean and direct. The nose opens with crisp apple, ripe pear and white peach, but the serious notes soon follow: lemon thyme, tarragon, a hint of red pepper and, beneath it all, that cold stone that doesn’t seek to please, only to tell the truth of the terroir. On the palate it is juicy and extractive, with phenolic curves and an almost viscous texture, somewhere between cream and salt, as if the wine were coated in a thin film of sea water clinging to the palate. The acidity is firm, not sharp: it tightens the whole and makes it long, with a mineral, dry and persistently salty finish that calls for food: seafood, grilled fish and citrus sauces.
