Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2024 Qvinterra Riesling Trocken is clear, deep, fresh and lemony on the nose. Sourced from the plateau in Nackenheim and the Oppenheim Sackträger, this is a round, savory, quite full-bodied, saline and lemon-fresh Qvinterra with aromatic, lychee-like fruit on the finish. 12% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at the domaine in August 2025.

Description
At Kühling Gillot, on the Rhine terraces of Rheinhessen, ambition has never been measured by the price of a bottle, but by loyalty to the land. Carolin Spanier-Gillot and H.O. Spanier steered the estate towards organic viticulture with a strong biodynamic influence at a time when it was still an uncomfortable choice: fewer shortcuts, more risk, more manual labour, more patience. Their guiding principle is “that the wine should resemble its soils”, and that is why the QVINTERRA® project was born as an uncompromising calling card: an entry-level wine crafted with the same care as their Erste and Große Lage wines. Here, there is a single variety and it reigns supreme: Riesling. And the terroir is not an abstract name, but a very specific blend of limestone and calcareous gravel from Oppenheim, with a small contribution of red slate to add spicy vigour and minerality.
Production
Kühling Gillot Qvinterra Riesling Trocken is made from ripe grapes, seeking juiciness without losing its edge. It ferments with indigenous yeasts, because in this winery spontaneity is not ‘corrected’: it is accompanied. Ageing takes place in a combination of stainless steel and large Doppelstück-style barrels, refining the texture without masking the character of the wine. After a period of resting on the lees to round out the mid-palate, it is bottled with the aim of preserving tension, clarity and that salty edge that defines the house style.
Taste
Kühling Gillot Qvinterra Riesling Trocken boasts a pale yellow colour with brilliant highlights. The nose does not shout: it suggests. First comes juicy yellow fruit—pineapple, nectarine, lemon—and immediately a fresh minerality creeps in, almost like wet stone. With a bit of air, a slightly smoky nuance emerges, along with a delicate herbal note, the sort that adds depth without making the wine ‘green’. On the palate, it is genuinely dry: a citrus attack, lively acidity, and a salinity that makes your mouth water and begs for another sip. The texture is surprisingly creamy for a Gutswein, yet always underpinned by energy and structure. It finishes long and clean, with mineral spice and a freshness that makes it dangerously drinkable.
