Description
In Prémeaux-Prissey, near Nuits Saint Georges, Jean-Jacques Confuron does not work to tame the vineyard, but to let it speak for itself. When Sophie Confuron and Alain Meunier took over the family estate in the late 1980s, they chose a path that was uncommon at the time: to steer the vineyard towards organic and sustainable viticulture, inspired by a vision of the soil as the true source of wine. That decision, driven more by conviction than commercial considerations, defines Les Fleurières, a Pinot Noir that does not seek to show off, but rather to express its terroir with clarity. The plot, situated south of Nuits Saint Georges, below Les Pruliers, rests on shallow limestone soils, with sand, gravel and silt – a mosaic that lends the wine fragrance, finesse and a very distinctive mineral tension. Within an appellation renowned for its vigour and structure, this Burgundy wine displays a more floral, more alluring, almost ethereal profile, without losing the serious character of the Côte de Nuits.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for J.J. Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurières is guided by a commitment to precision and transparency. The grapes are completely destemmed and transferred to concrete vats, where they undergo cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation takes place under temperature control to preserve the aromatic detail and avoid any aggressive extraction. The wine is then transferred to barrels, where it remains for between 15 and 18 months, with around 30 per cent new oak. The ageing process is not intended to dominate the wine, but rather to give it depth, structure and complexity. Bottling takes place without fining or filtering, with minimal intervention, to preserve the vineyard’s energy intact.
Taste
On the nose, J.J. Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurières opens with raspberry, red cherry and tart strawberry, immediately enveloped by violets, lavender, orange peel and a subtle hint of spice. On the palate, it is silky and medium-bodied, with a vibrant freshness that prolongs the fruit and a structure of polished tannins that provide support without harshness. Everything here speaks of balance, of quiet elegance, of a Nuits Saint Georges that is more floral than austere, more subtle than bold, yet profoundly Burgundian.
