Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
There is a big change in the 2015 Celler Batlle Brut Nature, because from this year forward, it's sourced only from the Can Romeu lieu-dit, a two-hectare plot (it was 6.5 hectares, but 4.5 hectares were replanted in 2021) on sandy and gravel soils, the historical zone where Gramona has sourced grapes, looking for more finesse and more ethereal wines. They keep the wine without dósage, and it has a spicy nose of curry and fennel. It's subtle and elegant, with a textured mouthfeel and tiny bubbles. It matured in bottle for no less than 98 months. The autolysis of the lees feels subtle, and there are very fine toast aromas. The bottle I tasted was disgorged one year ago, something they are going to do for this wine and for the Enoteca range, so it has had time to settle. 2015 was the beginning of warmer and drier years, but the wine keeps the freshness, elegance and poise. 4,000 bottles produced.

Description
From the depths of the deepest Penedès, where time stretches with the elegant slowness of the traditional method, comes Celler Batlle, Gramona's great sparkling wine. A jewel that is not improvised: behind it there are more than 130 years of a family that has made sparkling wine a religion. The story begins with a friendship forged between the Gramona and Batlle families, winegrowers and producers of still wines at the beginning of the 20th century. It was Josep Batlle, the great-grandfather of the current team, who decided to take a bold turn: to opt for long ageing in a country where haste and youth dominated the market. Today, Gramona Celler Batlle is his tribute: a cuvée only possible with patience and an intimate relationship with the land.
It is made mainly from Xarel.lo (70%) and Macabeo (30%), coming from old vines in clay-limestone soils of the Font de Jui estate in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. Here, the Mediterranean climate brings light and ripeness, but the altitude and the mountain breeze help to preserve the tension. It is a land of contrasts, where biodiversity is respected as an ethical principle: Gramona has been working biodynamically for years, understanding the vineyard as a living, harmonious organism. It is not just a matter of caring for the grape, but of listening to it.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with selection in the vineyard and on the table, cluster by cluster. After a gentle pressing, the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. But the soul of Gramona Celler Batlle lies in its ageing: more than 10 years on the lees, at a constant temperature in Gramona's underground cellars. Each bottle is disgorged manually and on demand, without the addition of expedition liqueur or with a minimum dosage, seeking the purest expression of the wine. This long ageing is not an adornment, it is the backbone that gives it depth, elegance and that almost silent complexity that only time can chisel out.
Taste
In Gramona Celler Batlle the nose is pure filigree: dried flowers, candied citrus peel, a whisper of roasted white fruit and toasted hazelnuts that open up little by little, without shrillness, like an ancient and noble perfume. There are notes of brioche bread, fresh butter, an echo of musk, and a background of wet chalk, mineral and fresh, as if someone had opened a window onto the very soil of the Penedès.
On the palate, it is a restrained symphony: creamy and sharp at the same time, with a very fine, almost ethereal bubble that caresses rather than bites. The acidity is perfectly integrated, like an invisible pillar supporting everything. Notes of baked apple, lemon peel, dried fennel, with a saline, long, persistent finish. It is not a wine of immediate impact, but one of those that you discover in sips, that force you to stop, to think, to take a deep breath.
Gramona Celler Batlle is not a sparkling wine for toasting; it is a meditation in the glass. It is proof that the Penedès region can look Champagne in the eye, with its own identity, without copying, without asking permission. A wine that does not shout, but leaves its mark.
