Description
On the highest slopes of the Font Jui Estate, in the heart of the Alt Penedès, Gramona Argent Rosé is born, a rarity in the already prestigious Gramona universe. The story of this wine is, as so often happens with great decisions, the result of a courageous intuition: what if Pinot Noir, so delicate and capricious, could speak to us with a Penedès accent in the form of a long-aged sparkling rosé?
It was Xavier Gramona, restless and visionary, who took up this challenge at the end of the 1990s, when most people were still anchored in the classicism of traditional cava. Faced with inertia, he chose to take a risk. He planted Pinot Noir in calcareous soils with clay components, facing north to preserve freshness, and practised biodynamic agriculture long before it became a trend. In this poor soil, with little organic matter but rich mineral structure, he found the ideal terroir to tame the variety and reveal it in its purest and most elegant version.
Gramona Argent Rosé is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, harvested by hand in small boxes and selected berry by berry. This rosé represents the most aristocratic and subtle side of the region, protected by the Corpinnat, the seal of maximum exigency in sparkling wines of long ageing in the Penedès.
Production
The process begins with a very gentle pressing, obtaining only the free-run juice. It is fermented at low temperature in stainless steel tanks, in order to preserve the aromatic delicacy. Subsequently, the base wine rests before tirage, with the addition of Gramona's own selected yeasts.
The second fermentation is carried out in the bottle according to the traditional method, and this is where the real magic happens: ageing on lees for over 36 months, in silence and semi-darkness, with manual stirring at a desk. There is no expedition liqueur; it is an honest, transparent brut nature, without make-up. The result: a sparkling wine that needs no artifice to be moving.
Taste
From the first moment in the glass, Gramona Argent Rosé displays a profile of noble sobriety. Its colour, a pale pink with salmon highlights, already speaks of restraint and finesse. The bubbles are very fine, perfectly integrated, almost aerial.
The nose is elegant and precise: subtle red fruit - pomegranate, raspberry, redcurrant - but without stridency, accompanied by notes of candied citrus peel, toasted almond and a background of fine brioche that betrays its long ageing. There are hints of wilted rose petal, forest after the rain, damp granite.
On the palate it is straight, sharp but enveloping, with a tension more reminiscent of a great Champagne blanc de noirs than a Mediterranean sparkling wine. A light, almost tactile salinity crosses the palate and enhances the memory of fresh red fruit. The finish is long, with a vibrant and precise acidity, a chalky sensation, dry earth and austere nobility.
Gramona Argent Rosé does not seek to seduce through exuberance, but conquers through its precision, its texture and its truth. Ideal for those who know that rosé can be an expression of depth and not just freshness.
