Description
In the heart of the Côte de Nuits, the Faiveley family has been interpreting Burgundy's most sober and structured identity for almost two centuries. Faiveley Nuits Saint Georges Les Montroziers is one of their most personal creations, named after Maurice Colrat de Montrozier, a 20th century politician and industrialist and a key figure in the family's history. Its name commemorates not only a lineage, but also the symbolic union of two worlds - wine and railways - that crossed in the marriage of Guy Faiveley and Yvonne in 1945.
The 4.84-hectare vineyard sits on east-facing clay-limestone soils in Nuits-Saint-Georges, one of the most serious and steadfast communes of the Côte d'Or. The vines, planted between 1928 and 2012, are grown organically, respecting the natural rhythm of the vine and the character of the terroir. Here, Pinot Noir expresses itself with mineral austerity, tension and earthy depth.
Winemaking
The approach in the cellar for Faiveley Nuits Saint Georges Les Montroziers is one of minimal intervention but maximum precision. 25% whole bunches are incorporated into the fermentation to add aromatic complexity and tannic structure. During 19 days of maceration, daily pump-overs are carried out to gently extract colour and aromas. The wine is racked by gravity and slowly pressed to separate the press wine with maximum purity. The wine is aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, between 20 and 30% new, seeking a balance between wood and fruit.
Taste
Faiveley Nuits Saint Georges Les Montroziers opens discreetly: notes of black cherry, wild raspberry and damp undergrowth. It is followed by nuances of fine leather, black tea and a whisper of liquorice. The palate is taut, with firm but polished tannins and a precise acidity that lengthens the drink. The chalky minerality is crisp, almost earthy, and the finish is long, restrained and saline. A wine that does not seek to seduce with exuberance, but with silence and depth. Ideal for those who appreciate the restrained elegance of the most serious and long-lived Burgundian Pinot Noir.
