Description
There are wines that speak. Not only for their taste, but for everything they carry inside: the history of those who make them, the soul of the land where they are born and the respect for time and nature. Clau de Nell Cabernet Franc is one of those wines.
Located in Anjou, in the heart of the Loire Valley, the Domaine Clau de Nell is a small wine-growing treasure that is committed to biodynamics. Anne-Claude Leflaive and her husband Christian Jacques rescued this estate in 2008, convinced that agriculture should flow with nature and not against it. Today, the legacy continues under the watchful eye of their team.
The Clau de Nell Cabernet Franc vineyard is between 45 and 55 years old. It sits on a soil of silty clay with red flint over calcareous tuff, a combination that lends minerality and tension to the grapes. Here, nothing is left to chance: the lunar cycles are worked with, plant infusions are used and the vineyard is covered with natural herbs. In other words, nature rules.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, selecting each cluster with care. The grapes are then destemmed and fermented with their indigenous yeasts, in a long, leisurely maceration of 30 days, where extraction is kept to a minimum to preserve the purity of the fruit. A light punching down, some gentle pumping over, and little else. Clau de Nell Cabernet Franc matures for 12 months on its lees in Burgundy barrels (228 litres, used 5 to 7 times) and rests for another 6 months in vats before being bottled without filtration or clarification, respecting its essence.
Taste
If aroma is a wine's calling card, Clau de Nell Cabernet Franc presents itself with elegance and an air of mystery. First, notes of ripe blackberries and blackcurrants, as if you had crushed the berries between your fingers. Then, a touch of graphite and pepper, as if the soil itself is speaking. On tasting, the texture is surprising: silky, with well-integrated tannins that don't impose themselves, but hold the structure firmly. On the finish, a whisper of fresh herbs, almost like rosemary or thyme, leaving a fresh and persistent sensation.
Clau de Nell Cabernet Franc is a wine that does not shout, but whispers. It does not seek to impress with power, but with balance. And that, with each sip, tells a little more of its story.
