Buy Wine with Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo variety has been one of the most ancient and extended grapes in the Piamonte. Its name comes from the Italian Word “nebbia” which means “fog”, maybe as a reference to the thick fog that spreads around the Nebbiolo vineyards. With early budding and very late ripening, Nebbiolo is a vigorous variety, capricious with the soil, preferring the clay limestone soils of the Alba region at the right bank of the Tanaro river, where wines from the DOCG Barbaresco and Barolo are produced.
Nebbiolo wines can only be compared to Pinot Noir ones for its ability to express the terroir where they have grown, this is the reason why all Nebbiolo wines mention the state where grapes come from. However, these wines have a clear colour that develops orange shades when aged in bottle. It has high acidity and tannic levels with a disquieting aroma range that includes petrol, gunpowder, smoke, moss, mushroom, currant cherries, liquorice, violets and roses.
Some of the best Nebbiolo producers are: Elio Altare, Enzo Boglietti, Ceretto, Aldo Conterno, Giacomo Conterno, Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elio Grasso, Giuseppe Mascarello, Bruno Rocca, Luciano Sandrone, Paolo Scavino, Vajra and Roberto Voerzio.
