Description

In the heart of Alsace, where limestone holds centuries of winemaking history, Grand Cru Hengst stands as a legendary terroir for Gewürztraminer. Since the 9th century, its south-east-facing slopes, stony and rich in marl and iron, have witnessed a viticulture marked by character. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, a pioneer in biodynamics in Alsace and an uncompromising defender of the Alsace terroir, grows vines here that are over 60 years old and withstand heat, drought and noble rot with natural elegance. The Zind family acquired their plots after the Second World War and, since then, their philosophy has been clear: listen to the land, don't impose a voice.

Winemaking

The vinification of Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Hengst Grand Cru is an exercise in patience. The grapes are pressed slowly, in long cycles that extract the essential without violating the fruit. Fermentation takes place spontaneously, with indigenous yeasts, in large 40-year-old oak barrels. There is no aggressive fining or filtration. The wine remains 18 months on its lees, gaining texture, depth and longevity. Malolactic fermentation, also natural, contributes to its smoothness without diluting its character.

Taste

Far from the exuberant stereotype of the variety, the Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Hengst Grand Cru is introspective, almost austere at first. The nose is subtle: beeswax, faint smoke, dried ginger and a suggestion of old rose. As it opens, notes of candied kumquat, quince and spices such as cardamom and clove emerge. The palate is dry, dense, with a glyceric texture that never saturates. The acidity is discreet but firm, and a chalky minerality runs through the palate. The finish is long, slightly bitter, with echoes of black tea and salinity. It is a wine that demands time, air and attention. A Gewürztraminer for ageing, with a soul of stone and a deep voice. Hengst, true to its name, is never fully tamed.
