Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The second vintage of La Vitoriana here, the 2019 Valtuille La Vitoriana fermented in a 1,000-liter oak vat and matured in a 500-liter oak barrel—different from the 2018, which matured in a smaller barrel. Perhaps the ratio of oak to wine has played well for this wine, which feels more elegant and harmonious, fresher and less concentrated. The ripeness is a little lower here than in the 2018; the old vines with low yields tend to ripen quickly, so you have a short window to pick the grapes. This finished with 13.4% alcohol and has a medium body with fine, chalky tannins. Really impressive. 620 bottles produced.

Description
On the rolling hillsides of Bierzo, where the vineyards embrace soils of decomposed slate and ferruginous clay, Raúl Pérez cultivates a personal truth in the form of wine. La Vitoriana is, more than a plot, an intimate chapter in his relationship with the land. Stemming from century-old vines planted at an altitude of over 500 metres on the outskirts of Valtuille de Abajo, this old and steep vineyard is one of the most unique in the area. A mosaic of Mencía for the most part, but dotted with other traditional grape varieties such as Alicante Bouschet, Doña Blanca and Palomino, which the winegrower refuses to uproot, stubbornly defending a biodiversity that others consider outdated.
Raúl, son and grandson of winegrowers, decided to recover this plot using organic methods, with no machinery other than his own hands and with no ambition other than to let the soil do the talking. In a particularly rainy year, when many colleagues opted for chemical treatments to save the harvest, he stood firm: "If I have to lose the vintage, I lose it, but I don't lose the vineyard" That seemingly irrational decision resulted in one of La Vitoriana's purest and most vibrant vintages.
Winemaking
The grapes for Valtuille La Vitoriana are picked by hand, bunch by bunch, in small crates, and transported immediately to the winery without refrigeration, to preserve the natural tension of the fruit. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in open vats, without completely destemming, allowing the stems to provide structure and rusticity. The wine undergoes a long, leisurely maceration, unhurried, with gentle daily punch-downs.
La Vitoriana is then aged for 12 to 14 months in used French oak barrels of large volume, respecting the expression of the terroir. It is not clarified or filtered. It is bottled with a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide to guarantee stability without compromising authenticity. Each bottle is almost a liquid reflection of the vineyard, without make-up or ornamentation.
Taste
Valtuille La Vitoriana opens with a restrained energy, like a mineral whisper that grows in intensity. The nose is delicately complex: wild black fruits, dried leaves, wilted violets and an earthy background reminiscent of damp stone and fine leather. Nothing is excessive or loud; each note appears with the leisurely pace of someone who is in no hurry to show off.
On the palate, Valtuille La Vitoriana enters with an aerial, sharp profile, like a caress with an edge. Tension, verticality and an almost tactile salinity cross the palate. The fruit, more austere than sweet, expresses itself in the form of wild blueberry and black cherry, with a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine upright. The tannins are filigree, almost gritty, but firm, accompanying a palate that evolves in layers: first freshness, then the noble dryness of the soils, and finally a spicy echo, between black tea, graphite and a slight bitterness of dried orange peel.
It is a wine that demands attention, which does not come easily, but rewards with depth and character. It is not a wine to show off, but to listen to. Each sip is a conversation with the purest and most rebellious Bierzo. A wine of altitude - not only physical, but also emotional.
