In 2022, Sidecar was produced in collaboration with Galician wine merchant Jose Luis Aragunde, and it comes from the same vineyard as the sparkling from 2020. The 2022 Sidecar Branco fermented in new 1,000-liter chestnut barrels purchased in Catalonia. There were two fermentations, one with grapes harvested earlier with more acidity and less alcohol. The second one was harvested a little later (two weeks) with ripe grapes. The first finished fermenting in the cask and matured for eight months, while the second one was full in the tonel. In the end, they only selected the second one, which was completely balanced, with 12% alcohol and the acidity and freshness from the altitude and granite soils. It has notes of white flowers and fennel, a round palate and no traces of oak. It’s floral and elegant.

Description

Susana Esteban Sidecar Branco is the most personal wine of Susana Esteban, a Galician winemaker who has left her mark on the Portuguese D.O.C.. Every year, Susana chooses a special guest to make Sidecar. In 2017, she had the honour of collaborating with the prestigious Brazilian journalist Jorge Lucki. Together they created an enigmatic blend that stands out for its persistent minerality. It is important to mention that only 1,320 bottles of this jewel, which has been awarded 94 Parker points, are produced.

Winemaking

The wine is made from grapes from old vineyards located in the Serra de São Mamede. The grapes are harvested by hand in 20 kg crates to avoid skin breakage and oxidation, thus ensuring the preservation of the fresh primary aromas. Fermentation of the wine takes place in Alsatian oak barrels with a capacity of 1,100 litres. Subsequently, the wine is aged for 10 months in the same barrels and bottled in July 2018.

Taste

To the eye, Sidecar Branco is clear and bright. On the nose, it offers a fresh and intense aroma, seducing with its characteristic minerality and elegant almond aromas. On the palate, it is powerful and round, leaving a lively and persistent aftertaste. It is recommended to be served between 9 and 12 °C and is ideal for pairing with fresh or steamed seafood, especially oysters and scallops.
