Description
In Val do Salnés, where the Atlantic does not accompany the vineyard: it directs it, Rodrigo Méndez (Forjas del Salnés) has been defending for years that Albariño can be more than just easy fruit and immediate freshness. O Raio Da Vella Albariño is born from this obsession with bottling coastline: mist, granite and salt. The idea comes from working plots that "speak softly", without strident aromas, and from assuming an uncomfortable premise in Rías Baixas: if the vintage is tight, harvest when the grapes are perfect, even if that means producing very little. This gesture -waiting for a minimum harvest window and renouncing volume- defines the character of the wine. There are no blends or concessions here: 100% Albariño with an Atlantic accent, aged to gain depth without losing nerve.
Winemaking
In O Raio Da Vella Albariño, the grapes come in fresh and are vinified for precision and texture rather than perfume. It is fermented and aged for 12 months in 2,500 litre oak foudre, a large vessel that provides slow and stable oxygenation, without marking the wine with obvious woody notes. Ageing on the lees builds volume, polishes the acidity and adds that creamy nuance that gives complexity without weight. Production is very short - 3,000 bottles -and the wine is bottled in September, when its structure and mineral profile have already settled.
Taste
In O Raio Da Vella Albariño, the nose first appears smoky and leesy, like hot stone cooling, and then freshly cut grass, restrained white flowers and crisp white fruit (apple and pale peach). Everything is enveloped in a subtle sea breeze: shell, fine brine, and a sense of cool air. The palate enters dry, with taut citrus (lime, lemon) and a rounder centre than usual for Albariño, thanks to the foudre. The texture is slightly chalky, almost chalky, and the finish leaves a clean, lingering salinity that sharpens the appetite. A Galician white wine of the landscape: more rock and sea than exuberance, long, serious and gastronomic.
