Description

In Val do Salnés, where almost everyone looks to the Atlantic thinking about whites, Rodrigo Méndez decided to listen to the sea from a red grape variety. Thus was born O Raio Da Vella Caiño, a small disobedience within Rías Baixas : to give the Caiño Tinto the leading role and show that the Atlantic character can also beat in red. Its vineyards, very close to the coast, cling to granite and sandy soils with the presence of kaolin, and to a climate of saline breezes and rainfall that force a patient, almost artisanal viticulture. Méndez works with a fixed idea: not to "make up" the grape, but to translate the place. It is said that in more than one harvest he preferred to wait an extra day -even with the sky threatening- to harvest with the skin and acidity at the right point, a brave decision when the Atlantic can change everything in hours. The result is a rare, fine and uncompromising Atlantic red wine, which does not seek to resemble anything else.

Winemaking

In O Raio Da Vella Caiño, the grapes are harvested by hand and enter the winery to ferment with indigenous yeasts, prioritising the freshness and identity of the vineyard. The ageing refines the wine without overpowering it: 12 months in French oak barrels, more to polish the texture and give depth than to add wood flavour. With a moderate alcohol content, it is bottled with the intention of preserving that nervous pulse, and is grateful for air: a brief decanting or a large glass opens it up, tidies it up and makes it even more precise.

Taste

O Raio Da Vella Caiño is neither jammy nor overripe: crisp red cherry, a hint of forest fruits and a trace of Atlantic herbs reminiscent of damp undergrowth after rain. A subtle salinity emerges, along with black pepper and a very fine spicy touch. Straight, taut and mineral on the palate, with an acidity that stretches the wine like a fine-tuned string. The tannin is fine-grained, almost powdery, more tactile than muscular. The finish is long, fresh, slightly saline and spicy, leaving the mouth clean and wanting another sip: O Raio Da Vella Caiño in its purest form.
