Description
Marguet La Grande Ruelle Grand Cru is not made, it is interpreted. In 2009, after taking over the reins of the family winery in Ambonnay, Benoît Marguet decided to leave convention behind and embrace radical biodynamic viticulture, aided by horses - Belle and Urban - instead of tractors. Thus was born Marguet La Grande Ruelle Grand Cru, a pure Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs from a single plot planted in 1967, on brown clay and fragmented chalk soils. Ambonnay, with its mineral and powerful character, finds here one of its most sober and elegant expressions, under the eye of a producer who works in sync with the lunar calendar and shuns all artifice.
Elaboration
For Marguet La Grande Ruelle Grand Cru, the grapes, harvested by hand at optimum ripeness, are gently pressed. The must flows by gravity into old oak barrels, without pumps, without filtering, without corrections. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously. Subsequently, the wine ages on lees in barrels for 9 months, without bâtonnage, without fining, without filtration, and bottled without added sulphites. Finally, it undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle and remains on the lees for a minimum of 36 months, providing depth, creaminess and a fine, persistent bubble.
Taste
On the nose, Marguet La Grande Ruelle Grand Cru unfolds with restrained elegance: ripe apple, subtle brioche, dried fruits, hints of dried flowers and a mineral background reminiscent of wet limestone. Flashes of candied lemon, stone fruit and white spices appear. When oxygenated, nuances of acacia honey, white tea and a delicate smoky reminiscence emerge. On the palate, the attack is pure, precise, with a crisp acidity that balances the vinosity of the Pinot Noir.
