Description
Some wineries are born from a plan, others from an obsession. Clos des Fées unashamedly belongs to the second family: that of Hervé Bizeul, sommelier and storyteller who one day decided to stop telling other people's stories and write his own with must and patience. His first wines were almost an act of faith - borrowed vines, rackings "wherever possible", courageous decisions without a net - and that energy continues to pulsate in Clos des Fées Les Sorcières Côtes du Roussillon Blanc, a white wine that does not seek make-up, but the luminous (and sometimes harsh) truth of Roussillon.
We are in Côtes du Roussillon, the Mediterranean close by, the sun with a steady pulse and the tramontane sweeping humidity and complacency. In this land of contrasts, the blend is a statement: Garnacha Blanca ( 40%), Vermentino (30%), Roussanne (20%) and Macabeo (10%). The young Vermentino and Roussanne were planted in 2011 on clay-limestone soil, in multi-clonal and massal, high-density planting. The backbone is provided by old Garnacha Blanca vines (1945) in the lieu-dit "Mas Farine": a vineyard that provides structure, amplitude and that serious Mediterranean aftertaste. Tradition and youth together, to balance fruit, texture and nerve.
Winemaking
At Clos des Fées Les Sorcières Côtes du Roussillon Blanc, the Vermentino and Roussanne are harvested early to capture maximum fruit and maintain low alcohol; the Garnacha Blanca is picked later, when it gains volume without losing its pulse. Everything is harvested by hand, with a criterion of freshness. Direct pressing of whole bunches at low temperature and low pressure for hours to preserve perfume and avoid oxidation. Light racking to preserve useful lees; fermentation in tank, at low temperature, with indigenous yeasts. Ageing on fine lees, refined with clay and bottled early in February, keeping the wine in "breeze" mode.
Taste
Les Sorcières Côtes du Roussillon Blanc has a clean nose of lemon and lime, followed by a riper peach nuance and a hint of restrained tropical fruit. Fresh almonds and a hint of citrus peel reminiscent of yuzu come to the fore. The palate is juicy but taut: the Vermentino stretches the citrus line, the Roussanne adds flesh without weight, the Garnacha Blanca opens up the centre with a broader texture and controlled ripeness, and the Macabeo finishes with a dry, herbal, saline echo. The finish is refreshing, digestive, clear stone and lemon zest: a white that does not tire, opens up hunger and calls for Mediterranean cuisine in big gulps.
