Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A 100% Sauvignon Blanc picked on August 24th, the 2022 Blanc from Les Champs Libres wafts from the glass with a delicate, fresh bouquet of menthol, white fruits, lemon and jasmine. Medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, it's precise and pure with a concentrated core of fruit and a long, penetrating and perfumed finish.

Features

Description

An ember of daring spirit and non-conformist elegance ignited the Lafleur Les Champs Libres project. It arose from the courageous desire of Julie and Baptiste Guinaudeau who, after storing two exceptional barrels from the À Louima vineyard in 2012, felt that something even more special could be born. In 2013, they decided to unite the À Louima, Les Pêchers and Les Acacias parcels, then added Mathilde, to give life to this singular white, an ode to the Sauvignon Blanc planted on clay, limestone and gravel soils of the Louima plateau and its surroundings. Lafleur Les Champs Libres is not just a wine; it is the imprint of a philosophy that reclaims the land, the terroir of Bordeaux-Supérieur, and sustainable viticulture with no strings attached. He tells the anecdote of having separated that complex nose between flowers and minerals that emerged from "À Louima": it was the spark of a new crossover between territories and dreams, between the Lafleur family tradition and the freedom to explore new Altura whites. Single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is born in Fronsac, on a dialectic of varied soils - clay-graveland sand -and a temperate, moderate Atlantic climate, which guarantees precise ripening and vibrant acidity.

Winemaking

The vinification of Lafleur Les Champs Libres begins with meticulous manual selection, followed by slow fermentation in barrels, where technical precision and respect for varietal expression guide every gesture. Ageing takes place on fine lees for several months, partly in new wood and partly in used barrels, seeking a balance between structure, volume and freshness. There are no unnecessary interventions: the wine is left to evolve on its own, gradually revealing its complexity and tension. The decision to ferment and age in barrels is a deliberate search for depth, texture and precision, without losing the verticality and mineral character of the Sauvignon Blanc.

Taste

When pouring Lafleur Les Champs Libres, the glass exhales a captivating bouquet: white flowers, orange blossom, guava, lemon honey, pink grapefruit, and light nuances of mint and sea spray that melt on a mineral base reminiscent of wet stones. On the palate, its vibrant freshness and restrained energy are surprising: succulent citrus - dried mango pulp, lime zest, ripe mandarin, but always restrained - unfurl over a clean acidic thread, underscored by a silky feel and pure length. The finish is persistent, with crisp minerality, subtle creaminess and a balance that retains all its energy without shrillness. It is both pure and sophisticated, exquisitely refined, and a superb partner for seafood, delicate fish or classic cheeses such as Manchego or Parmesan, thanks to its fine acidity and refined structure.
