Sourced from several different, rather shallow soils and based on Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, the cherry colored 2016 Rot is pure and fresh on the still reductive nose that offers red cherries and dark fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a light, fresh and delicate red that tastes clear and fresh—almost like a white wine—but also shows ripe, crunchy tannins that are perfectly intermixed with the mineral character of this nicely spicy red. The mash wasn't extracted—there was no remontage, just an infusion over 14 days. The wine was aged for one year in oak and was bottled in autumn 2017.
