The 2022 Escondite del Ardacho El Abundillano is a single-vineyard red from a one-hectare clos in the village of Viñaspre planted mostly with Garnacha, with some 6% Tempranillo and 4% Malvasía, at 590 meters altitude on sandstone and marl soils. It fermented in open-top vats with 40% whole clusters and matured in second-use, 500-liter Hungarian oak barrels for 10 months. The wine is ripe and heady, reflecting a very warm year and hits the scale at 15.5% alcohol. It has some creaminess and notes of cereal. It's full-bodied, with some rustic tannins, which to Oliván is the signature of the warmer years. 1,601 bottles were filled in August 2023. No 2021 was produced because the grapes were lost from hail.

Description
Escondite del Ardacho El Abundillano is a red wine produced by Roberto Oliván, one of the most innovative and young winemakers of the Rioja Alavesa, under his project Tentenublo Wines. This project aims to revitalise the traditional character of the region's wines, incorporating minimal intervention methods and viticulture that respects the environment.
Escondite del Ardacho El Abundillano is made mainly from Garnacha (90%), complemented by 6% Tempranillo and 4% Malvasía. The grapes come from a small plot of 0.95 hectares called El Abundillano, located in Viñaspre at an altitude of 590 metres. The vineyards are between 8 and 95 years old, and are planted on marl and sandstone soils, with a shallow bedrock that gives the grapes unique characteristics. The area's Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, influences the ripening of the fruit, resulting in a wine with great concentration and power.
Winemaking
The winemaking process begins with spontaneous fermentation in open vats, with 60% of the grapes destemmed. Gentle punching down is carried out to favour a delicate maceration, respecting the characteristics of the grapes as much as possible. Ageing is carried out for 9 months in second-use Hungarian oak barrels, which allows a harmonious integration of the wood without dominating the fruity and fresh flavours of the wine. After ageing, the wine is bottled without fining or filtering, preserving its purity and natural character.
Taste
El Escondite del Ardacho El Abundillano 2022 is distinguished by its aromatic intensity, with a predominance of floral notes, particularly violets, which mingle with mineral and earthy nuances. On the palate, it is a medium to full-bodied wine, with a fresh and juicy passage, accompanied by fine tannins that give it elegance and persistence. Its balanced structure, together with the mineral nuances of the sandy-marly soil, provides complexity and length on the palate.
This wine is perfect to accompany red meat dishes, game and cured cheeses, where its freshness and ageing capacity can complement the intense textures and flavours of these foods. It is advisable to serve it at a temperature of 16ºC and to decant it before drinking so that it releases its full aromatic potential, especially if it shows some degree of reduction when the bottle is opened.
