Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The latest release of the NV Brut Charles de Gaulle was disgorged in December 2018 with seven and a half grams per liter dosage, and the wine is showing very well, bursting from the glass with a generous bouquet of golden orchard fruits, warm biscuits, honeycomb and peach. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit and nicely integrated dosage that lends the wine an old-fashioned, gourmand profile that's appropriate enough given its namesake. I'd expect this to pick up considerable toasty complexity with additional aging on cork.

Features

Description

Drappier Charles de Gaulle is a cuvée of great character and complexity, personally chosen by Charles de Gaulle for his private receptions. This champagne is a tribute to his taste and elegance, reflecting the authenticity and distinctive bouquet that characterise the house of Drappier.
The composition of this champagne is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, a combination that offers exceptional complexity and structure. The Pinot Noir adds body and depth, while the Chardonnay offers freshness and elegance.

Winemaking

Only the juices from the first pressing are used for production and ageing. The champagne has a dosage of 7.5 g/l and oxidation is avoided by using gravity, no filtration and minimal use of sulphur. Malolactic fermentation is completed in a total of two weeks, and 100% of the wines are made in vats to preserve their freshness. In addition, it is bottled and aged for at least three years, which contributes to its complexity and character.

Taste

The flavour profile of Champagne Drappier Charles de Gaulle is truly exceptional. On the nose, notes of citrus, apple, almond or perhaps nutmeg are prominent. On the palate, the Cuvée Charles de Gaulle exhibits remarkable complexity, with an airy mousse and slightly candied notes. It reveals a creamy, unctuous texture, with a broad entry and a mouthful of character, fruity and elegant. The experience is completed by a long, slightly tangy finish, which leaves a lasting and pleasant impression.
