Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, the 2023 Pichon-Longueville Baron is a terrific effort from this estate, unwinding in the glass with aromas of crème de cassis, dark berries, pencil shavings, cigar wrapper, violets and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, it's deep and concentrated, with sweet structuring tannins and a long, resonant finish. The charm and vibrancy of the vintage lends this considerable appeal, without effacing Pichon Baron's more serious, Cabernet-driven personality.

Description
Château Pichon Baron is one of the leading names in Pauillac and in the historic Bordeaux classification. Its identity stems from a very clear conviction: to express the nobility of the Médoc without embellishment, with precision, depth and a structure designed to stand the test of time. The estate, shaped by centuries of history and a modern renovation that prioritised excellence without taming the wine’s character, operates with a highly precise plot-by-plot approach. At the heart of the estate, on the deep gravel soils typical of the Pauillac appellation, the vines benefit from perfect drainage and a mineral tension that defines the estate’s style. The Atlantic climate, tempered by the estuary, favours slow and balanced ripening. Château Pichon Longueville Baron is made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, varieties which find one of their most classic and aristocratic expressions here.
Winemaking
The winemaking process at Château Pichon Longueville Baron is based on a rigorous selection of plots and grapes. After the harvest, the fruit is brought into the cellar for meticulous vinification, with controlled fermentations and macerations tailored to the profile of each batch. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for 18 months in barrels, with a high proportion of new oak, which imparts structure, depth and ageing potential without overshadowing the terroir. Bottling completes a process designed to preserve tension, concentration and elegance.
Taste
On the palate, Château Pichon Longueville Baron offers the classic character of a great Pauillac red wine. The nose reveals blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite and delicate spices, with a very pronounced mineral undertone. The attack is silky, but a firm, intense and perfectly defined structure soon emerges. The tannins are dense, noble and precise, supporting a core of deep, fresh black fruit. The palate combines power, structure and refinement, with the oak perfectly integrated. The finish is very long, fresh and spicy, leaving the impression of a great Bordeaux wine: serious, distinguished and deeply gastronomic.
