Description

Barrat Masson does not see Champagne as an exercise in luxury, but as an act of loyalty to a corner of Sézannais that often remains out of the spotlight. Loïc Barrat Masson and Aurélie Masson made an uncomfortable decision: to work the vineyard as a living being, with patience and precision, and to bottle only what the year and the parcels deserve. Barrat Masson Nuances de Cornoie is not a "brand" repeated on autopilot: it is a terroir reading, a Champagne Blanc de Noirs that speaks from Villenauxe-la-Grande with a serious, chalky and sharp voice. Here the Pinot Noir is not looking for fruity make-up; it is looking for structure, nerve and truth. There is a kind of silent pride in this Brut Nature: the pride of those who prefer to lose quick applause rather than sweeten the story.

Winemaking

In Barrat Masson Nuances de Cornoie Brut Nature, the grapes go in and are treated with tact: careful pressing, selection of the finest fractions and cellar work that avoids aggressiveness. The base is aged in a combination of stainless steel (to preserve the clean line, the cold pulse) and a part in wood (to provide shoulders, texture, depth without aromatisation). Then comes what separates the nervous wines from the great wines: 48 months of ageing on the lees in the bottle, long and patient, until the bubbles become very fine and the whole is sewn together inside. Disgorgement is done calmly and the wine rests for 3-6 months before release. And the final gesture is total: zero dosage. No sugar to round corners: if there is an edge, it is the edge of the ground.

Taste

In Barrat Masson Nuances de Cornoie Brut Nature, the glass is not "perfume and confetti". It is rather wet stone, cold air and citrus. At first a subtle note of fine yeast emerges, like freshly sliced bread, and then the fan of lime, lemon and grapefruit: not sweet, but incisive. The palate enters dry and vertical, with an acidity that sharpens the gaze and an insistent, small-grained bubble that pushes the wine like a needle. The Pinot Noir expresses itself without red weight; here it is a backbone: citrus peel, a minimal echo of stone fruit and, in the background, a chalky salinity that lengthens the drink. The wood does not "taste" of wood: it is noticeable as a texture, as a wider centre of the mouth. Long, tense, stony and very gastronomic finish.
