Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Similar to the varietal Merenzao from the same year, the 2016 Serradelo Brancellao feels like a triumph over the adverse conditions of the year. And like its sibling, this seems to have a subtle creamy patina, perhaps imparted by the élevage of 12 months in 300-liter French oak barrels, which somewhat masks the character of this delicate variety. It's medium-bodied and balanced, with fine but slightly dusty tannins and a dry finish. It should show better with a little more time in bottle. 5,228 bottles were filled in April 2019.

Description
The Algueira Serradelo red wine is a unique expression of viticulture in the Ribeira Sacra region. This red wine is made from 100% Brancellao variety, a native grape that brings distinctive characteristics to this wine. The vineyards where this grape comes from benefit from slate soils, varied orientations and a Mediterranean microclimate, factors that significantly influence the quality and profile of the wine.
Winemaking
The elaboration of Algueira Serradelo is a careful and artisanal process. The grapes are trodden with the feet and fermented in French oak barrels, with a prolonged maceration. This traditional method is combined with a 12-month ageing in 225-litre French oak barrels, which have gone through more than five cycles of use. This ageing process contributes to the complexity and structure of the wine, without dominating its fruit profile.
Taste
Algueira Serradelo is a true representation of the Brancellao variety. It is characterised by an intense cherry colour with orange hues, typical of the ageing process. Initially, a certain rusticity is perceived that gives way to notes of ripe acidic fruits, such as red plum, and balsamic touches, such as black tea and laurel. The background of the wine reveals hints of marc.
On the palate, Algueira Serradelo surprises with its outstanding acidity and round texture. The first sip reveals a tannic presence that underlines the strength and personality of the variety. The aftertaste brings with it flavours of chocolate, adding an extra layer of complexity to this distinctive wine. Its flavour profile is a balance between tradition and the unique expression of the Ribeira Sacra terroir.
