Description
Alexandre Bain is one of the Loire's most unique vignerons, a Sauvignon Blanc rebel who defies the rules with his uncompromising, biodynamic approach. Alexandre Bain Pierre Précieuse comes from Pouilly Fumé, but does not carry the appellation on the label, as Bain departs from established standards in search of the purest expression of his terroir. Here, on Kimmeridgian limestone soils, where limestone outcrops with embedded marine fossils, his vines are grown without chemicals, with low yields and a philosophy of minimal intervention.
Winemaking
At Alexandre Bain Pierre Précieuse, the grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness, something unusual in the region, where it is customary to harvest early to preserve acidity. Bain, on the other hand, opts for full maturity. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks and neutral barrels, without temperature control, allowing the wine to follow its own rhythm. It is aged on the lees for several months, without filtration or clarification, and with just a touch of sulphur at bottling.
Taste
Alexandre Bain Pierre Précieuse is not your typical sharp, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc. Here, the fruit is ripe and enveloping, with aromas of quince, baked apple and beeswax, intertwined with a mineral background of wet stone and vibrant salinity. On the palate, the texture is ample, with perfectly integrated acidity supporting the weight of the wine and propelling it towards a long finish, where notes of stone fruit, candied citrus and an almost electric chalky echo emerge. A Sauvignon Blanc without artifice, authentic and with character, that defies expectations and gives itself without fear of time and evolution.
