Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Pepe Luis shows the warmer and drier year with a more Mediterranean profile, notes of dry herbs and nutty touch. The palate is round and gentle but has the granite granularity that gives it a dry, chalky mouthfeel. It has 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.26 and 5.9 grams of acidity, lower than usual. This had a much longer élevage of 17 months in oak foudre, but the wine is not oaky. 6,666 bottles were filled in March 2024.

Description
Albamar Pepe Luis is a white wine made exclusively from Albariño grapes, a tribute by Galician winemaker Xurxo Alba to his late brother. This wine stands out for its origin in the vineyards of the area of O Salnés, in Rías Baixas, Galicia, a wine region with an Atlantic climate and unique soils. The Albamar vineyards, located at sea level and very close to the coast, receive a constant marine influence that is perceived in the saline profile of the wine. The selected plots have granite and schist soils, with an average age of the vines between 40 and 45 years, which provides a remarkable structure and minerality in each vintage. Albamar farms sustainably and organically, respecting the natural environment and promoting biodiversity in the vineyard.
Winemaking
The vinification of Albamar Pepe Luis is a meticulous process, starting with a manual harvest that ensures the selection of grapes at their optimum ripeness. Pressing is carried out with whole bunches, without destemming, in order to maintain the integrity of the fruit and obtain a high quality must. Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts present on the grape skins, which helps to express the identity of the terroir. This process takes place in neutral French oak barrels, which provide moderate micro-oxygenation without altering the fruity character of the Albariño. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 to 17 months in the same barrels, depending on the vintage, which gives it smoothness and complexity without losing freshness.
In addition, no fining is carried out and only a light filtration is done before bottling, maintaining the wine's natural properties to the maximum. As for the use of sulphites, they are minimised or even omitted in certain vintages in order to offer the purest possible wine.
Taste
In terms of tasting, Albamar Pepe Luis stands out for its marked and balanced acidity, which makes it vibrant and refreshing in the mouth. The citrus aromas of lemon and green apple are complemented by notes of pear and subtle herbal and honey nuances, the result of ageing on the lees. The presence of salinity, the result of the Atlantic influence, gives it a unique structure, highlighting its mineral and dry character on the palate. This sensory profile makes Pepe Luis an ideal wine for those looking for an Albariño with personality and ageing capacity, a wine with elegant textures and a long, persistent finish, capable of ageing gracefully in the bottle and of accompanying fish, seafood and white meat dishes with sophistication.
