Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Tierra de Luna is from a more-Mediterranean village in San Martín de Valdeiglesias and comes from three plots at 750 to 850 meters in altitude; it's from a great year in the zone and is like a rounder version of 2014. It has 10% Cariñena complementing the majority of Garnacha, and the full clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts and a long maceration. It matured in 500- and 600-liter oak barrels for 16 months. It has notes of roses and tar and is a little earthy, with abundant, fine-grained tannins that give it a slightly powdery mouthfeel. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.17 and 6.25 grams of acidity, and it's clean, balanced, tasty and long. 1,276 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023.

Description

In the wild heart of the Sierra de Gredos, where granite soils rise up like ancient scars under a ruthlessly clear sky, four friends - two oenologists, a winemaker and a sommelier - decided to challenge the established rules of Castilian viticulture. Thus 4 Monos Viticultores was born, a winery that not only honours the wild character of the environment, but blends in with it. " Tierra de Luna" is one of their most personal and enigmatic wines, a tribute to the mountain night, to the coolness that descends among the Castaño trees and to the whisper of a viticulture of minimal intervention.

The vineyard is located on the Madrid side of Gredos, within the Vinos de Madrid D.O., specifically in San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The old Garnacha vines, with a small contribution of Cariñena (10%), -some of them more than 70 years old- cling to terraces of decomposed granitic soils, extremely poor and draining, at an altitude of more than 700 metres above sea level. The extreme climate, with cold nights and scorching sunny days, marks a slow and tense ripening process, where the natural acidity is preserved like a treasure. The decision to preserve small plots at Altura, often forgotten because of their difficult access or low profitability, is a declaration of principles: here, authenticity takes precedence over comfort.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with an almost surgical work to respect the natural expression of each cluster. " Tierra de Luna" ferments with indigenous yeasts, without corrections or additives, in small open vats and used foudres. The Garnacha, with part of the stalk intact, provides structure and verticality; the touch of Cariñena, co-fermented at 10%, adds depth, tension and a wild counterpoint of elegant rusticity.

After fermentation, the wine is aged for 11 months in 500-litre used oak barrels, where oxygen acts as a subtle refiner, never as the protagonist. There is no fining or filtration. Just a light dose of sulphur at bottling, like someone who closes the door to the world to preserve a secret.

Taste

From the first contact, "Tierra de Luna" does not shout: it whispers firmly. The nose is ethereal and earthy, with echoes of dried leaves, pomegranate peel and a minerality reminiscent of wet stone after a storm. There is a very subtle tart cherry, notes of wild raspberry and an inflection of thyme and dried lavender that betrays the undergrowth.

On the palate, the entry is precise, delicately sharp. A luminous acidity sweeps across the palate like a lunar reflection on a calm lake. The tannin is fine, dusty, almost insinuated. Nothing is superfluous, everything floats. The palate is fresh, almost weightless, but with a depth that gradually emerges. On the finish, a mineral salinity clings to the palate, with a long aftertaste where pomegranate, quartz and a slightly bitter note of almond skin reappear.

A wine that does not seek to convince with volume or power, but with mystery, subtlety and an almost spiritual transparency. For those who enjoy wine as if they were listening to a piece of chamber music under a starry sky. For those who are not afraid of silence.
