Buy Wine from Château Latour
The beginnings of Château Latour date back to 1331 when Lord Pons orders the construction of a turret at Saint-Lambert parish, today known as Château Latour precisely. In 1378, on account of the Hundred Years' Ward, Saint-Lambert fortress was used as watch-tower under the command of the king of France, from that point the Gironde estuary was visible and also any possible attack. Soon the turret was occupied by the English army until 1453. From then until the end of 1500, Latour was a joint stately manor that rented the plots to peasants for wine production. Later, the domaine was owned by Mullet family for about one century. During its history it had been managed by different people but at the end of the 17th century, as a result of different successions and inheritances Château Latour finally falls into the hands of Alexandre de Ségur, who shortly before his death also purchased Château Lafite-Rothschild. With him, Latour wines gained respect and aristocracy confidence. His son, Nicolas-Alexandre, will continue the family business and expand the holdings with Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Calon Segur. Under the guidance of Ségur family changes are in the air and despite the difficulties caused by Alexandre and Nicolas-Alexandre demises, the phylloxera pest and the French Revolution, Latour remains in the hands of the family for 300 years. Will it be Latour Golden Age? We were not there, but truth is that domaine wines reached the United States and the president at the time, Thomas Jefferson, declared himself a Latour enthusiast. Nevertheless, the family sagas often lead to complications, especially when fatalities and heritages are involved, as every branch of the family has its own interests. Thus in 1962, Ségur descendants declared bankruptcy and sold 53% of the company to Pearson financial group, owners of the Financial Times, and another 25% to Harveys Bristol, part that was subsequently sold to Allied Lyons. With the capital injection, the domaine undergoes a series of adaptations in its facilities; all the tanks are replaced by new stainless steel ones with cooling system: Château Latour modern era has just begun. Finally, in 1989 Allied Lyons purchased all Pearson shares and took control of 93% of Societé Civile Château Latour. In 1993 the multimillionaire French businessman François Pinault, (owner of clothing brands Yves St. Laurent, Gucci, and Christie's auction house) acquired all Château Latour shares and appointed Frédéric Engerer as general manager, a choice that will launch Latour wines up to the top of Bordeaux wines ranking.
François Pinault is also proprietor of the following domaines: celebrated Domaine Rene Engel in Vosne Romanée, currently named Domaine d'Eugénie; Château Grillet at the Rhone Valley ; and Araujo in Napa Valley.
The estate of Château Latour is placed at the Médoc department, in Pauillac municipality and neighbour to Saint Julien village, where Château Léoville Las Cases vineyards are planted. Its prevailing variety in their 78 hectares is Cabernet Sauvignon but they also have Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on clay-sandy and gravel soils. Latour produces three wines; the splendid Château Latour among them which has been awarded the distinction Premier Crú Classé at the official classification of 1855. The vines that are used for its production (47 hectares) are placed surrounding the manor, and the plot is named L'Enclos. This is an elegant, refined, subtle and pure wine with marvellous cassis, cedar, spices and cherries scents. Although it is delectable and bourgeois to the palate, it is a wine that needs some years' lay down in bottle, as the blending has a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon which develops an interesting tannic structure. Since 1966, the winery produces a second wine, Les Forts de Latour, from the L'Enclos young vineyards. On the other hand, those deposits that do not reach the quality standard required to produce Château Latour are used for Les Forts. Moving, balanced, mature and fresh, Les Forts is easy to drink and absolutely glorious. Finally, the third wine, Pauillac de Château Latour from two plots of 30 hectares that are placed far from L'Enclos. Its moderate structure provided by an increase of Merlot in its coupage, rends it suitable for immediate intake.
