Buy Wine with Malvasía de Sitges
Malvasía is a variety original from the Medieval Greek town of Monemvasía, placed at the eastern coast of the Peloponnesus. Malvasía de Sitges has early budding and late ripening. Because of its fruitfulness, long pruning is recommended. It is prone to suffer powdery mildew and can also suffer spring frosts damages.
This variety has different names all along the western Mediterranean sea, Canary Islands and Madeira Island. Malvasía de Sitges still survives in Cataluña, where an aromatic, fresh and sweet wine is produced in the appellation Penedés. It is also used to add aroma and freshness to other neutral white wines in that area.
In Sicily, Italy, Malvasía de Sitges is called Malvasía di Lipari, and it is the base for the renowned dehydrated sweet wine with intense orange taste.
In Sardinia it is known as Malvasía di Sardegna and is used to produce sweet and dry wines, sometimes fortified (aged at least for two years) in the designations of origin Malvasia di Cagliari and Malvasia di Bosa.
