Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
We talked a lot about the challenging 2013, but they defended the wines. 'There was a big crop, and it was not easy, but it was possible to make great wines.' The 2013 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva has nutty aromas, perhaps showing a little more development, but according to Mercedes López de Heredia, '[With] the old vines with the right rootstock, in the right soils, you can have more or less quality, but you're not going to have a disaster.' It's a wine that has to have aging potential, and they need to start with good grapes, so they harvested earlier, as their grapes were riper because they had lowered their yields. They took risks, and I think they got it right. The palate has intense and pungent flavors, a velvety mouthfeel and a vibrant core of acidity, with a fine thread and a chalky finish. But it's a slightly weaker year. 14,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.

Description
Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva is the purest expression of Rioja classicism taken to the extreme of patience. Born in the oldest winery in Haro, this white comes from a deep respect for tradition and the land: a blend of Viura (90%) and Malvasía (10%), from the historic Viña Tondonia estate, planted in 1913 on the stony terraces next to the Ebro. There, in alluvial and calcareous soils, a white wine with the soul of a red wine is born. The López de Heredia family, far from giving in to modern trends, decided to continue making long-aged whites even when nobody was asking for them, trusting that time would prove them right. And so it did.
Winemaking
The winemaking process of Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva is faithful to the traditional methods that the winery has not abandoned for more than 140 years. After a manual harvest and spontaneous fermentation in oak vats, the wine rests for six years in American oak barrels, with biannual racking and clarification with fresh egg whites. Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva is then bottled unfiltered and continues to evolve in the bottle until it reaches its fullness. There is no rush: just the natural rhythm of the wine and its slow transformation.
Taste
In the glass, Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva has a golden colour with amber highlights. On the nose, it displays a fascinating complexity: ripe white fruit, dried orange peel, dried fruits, notes of beeswax, infusion of dried flowers and a background of perfectly integrated old wood. The palate is enveloping, dry and savoury, with a lively acidity that contrasts with its unctuous texture. There are notes of candied citrus, toasted almonds, apple peel and a lingering salinity. The finish is long, with echoes of noble oxidative ageing and an elegance that is hard to match. It is a white that defies categories, ages like a great Burgundy and speaks the language of time. A wine for attentive drinkers, oblivious to haste.
