Description
High above Piekenierskloof, on eroded soils of ancient sandstone, Eben Sadie discovered old Garnacha vines surviving in extreme conditions. Low-growing vines, punished by drought and wind, that offered little fruit but poignant depth. This is where The Sadie Family Soldaat was born, a wine that does not seek to impress, but to reveal. Its name - "soldier" in Afrikaans - alludes to its origins in lands of ancient military routes, but also to its steadfast, austere and resilient character.
Eben Sadie, a central figure in the South African wine revolution, was committed to purity. In a context where oak and over-extraction dominated, he chose concrete as the only vehicle. A decision that today feels radical and poetic at the same time: to let the wine speak without make-up, to let the place and the fruit be the voice.
Winemaking
The vinification of The Sadie Family Soldaat respects the natural rhythm of the wine. Thirty percent of the wine is vinified with whole bunches and the rest is destemmed, just enough to start fermentation with indigenous yeasts. After 30 days in contact with the skins, it is pressed in an old basket press and returned to concrete. There, it spends 12 months : 8 months on the lees and 4 more to settle, without aggressive racking, without fining. Only a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide is added before bottling.
Taste
The Sadie Family Soldaat opens with a delicate but penetrating fragrance of wild strawberry, red cherry and fresh pomegranate, accompanied by dry notes of Mediterranean herbs and hot stone. On the palate, it is surprisingly vertical: light but taut, with electric acidity and firm but very fine, almost gritty tannins. There is no excessive weight or obvious sweetness. There is clarity. A transparency that allows you to feel the landscape: dry, stony, honest. The Sadie Family Soldaat does not flatter, it demands attention. It is a mountain wine, with nerve and soul. Better still, it is a wine that improves with time and rewards those who know how to wait.
