Same as with Viña Real's, I hadn't tasted the more modern Tempranillo aged in new French oak from CVNE for a long while, and the wine to be released now is also from 2016, so I tasted the 2016 Real de Asúa. This wine was first produced in 1999 and matured in barrique for 18 months. It has a mixture of modern and traditional Rioja, but here I find more tannins and a little more influence from the aging in barrel. It's obviously young and should improve with a little more time in bottle. 3,000 bottles were filled in January 2018.

Description

The history of Real de Asúa stems from an intimate concern: to express the elegance of the Rioja without resorting to excess. Winemakers deeply linked to the family tradition sought a wine that would speak of its origin with a restrained voice, without stridency. The inspiration came from a challenging vintage, where rain threatened to ruin the harvest, but ended up revealing grapes of unusual depth. Made mainly from Tempranillo, this wine comes from vineyards located in La Rioja Alta, on clay-limestone soils and with a moderate continental climate, which gives freshness, slow ripening and a natural structure to the wine. Here, tradition is embraced with technical precision to build a red wine of Altura and modern pulse.

Winemaking

The grapes for Real de Asúa are harvested by hand and selected berry by berry on the table, guaranteeing only impeccable fruit intake. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, at a controlled temperature, and with gentle pumping-overs that respect the structure of the wine. Part of Real de Asúa undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels, which adds texture and complexity. The ageing process takes between 14 and 18 months in French oak, refining the wine's profile without masking its origin. Finally, bottling is carried out without aggressive stabilisation or excessive filtering, thus preserving the purity, authenticity and longevity of Real de Asúa.

Taste

Deep red with garnet rim, Real de Asúa seduces from the first moment with a nose that displays aromas of ripe black fruit, cherry, plum and floral hints, intertwined with spicy notes (clove, cocoa, liquorice) and a balsamic background reminiscent of damp undergrowth. On the palate, Real de Asúa is structured but fluid, with fine tannins, balanced tension and a lively acidity that lengthens its length. It blends hints of noble wood, soft tobacco and a mineral, slightly earthy finish. Persistent and harmonious, this wine combines depth and precision, ideal for those seeking Rioja with a classic soul and contemporary ambition.
