Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Not all wines are produced every year, and it's been a while since I encountered the Garnacha Tintorera from Quinta da Mradella. This time, I tasted the 2015 Garnacha Tintorera produced from 70- to 80-year-old head-pruned vines on boulder and granite/sand soils, which has only 12.26% alcohol. It fermented in concrete vats and matured in used French oak foudres. This has clear varietal notes and a varietal profile, with a dark color and natural concentration augmented by the old vines and the ripe, warm year. It has a rustic, earthy profile with some dusty tannins and good balance, thanks to the natural acidity of the variety. This is a great example of the grape as well as how the wine can be elegant within the rustic personality of the variety. 1,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2018.
Between 14ºC and 16ºC
Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation with whole bunches in open oak tubs. Aged for 13 months in French oak barrels. Bottled without filtering nor clarifying.
