Description
On the slopes surrounding La Aguilera, in the heart of Ribera del Duero, Jorge Monzón decided to look back in order to move forward. In a land dominated by powerful reds, he rescued the traditional claret, that historic style that blends red and white grapes in co-fermentation, almost forgotten but deeply linked to the viticultural memory of the place. His project, Dominio del Águila, is based on old vines planted at an altitude of 800 metres, grown in clay, sand and limestone soils, under an extreme continental climate, with late frosts and short, intense summers. Organic viticulture is at the core: no herbicides, no irrigation, no manipulation. Just patience, listening and respect for the land.
Winemaking
The grapes - Tempranillo, Albillo, Garnacha, Garnacha, Bobal and other ancestral varieties - are harvested by hand and fermented together to make Pícaro del Águila Clarete, with whole bunches, without destemming, in a spontaneous process that lasts up to nine months. The wine then rests in used French oak barrels for a further ten months in cool underground caves. There is no fining, filtration or malolactic fermentation. Intervention is minimal; the character of the vineyard is expressed without filtering.
Taste
Visually, Pícaro del Águila Clarete is both disconcerting and seductive: a shade between pale ruby and onion skin, luminous and changeable. On the nose, it unfolds layers: raspberry, wild cherry, candied quince, spicy notes (cinnamon, clove) and a background of hot stone, faint smoke and dried herbs. On the palate, the acidity is vibrant, supported by a delicate structure of fine tannins. It combines the freshness of a white with the tension and persistence of a light red. It finishes with a subtle salinity, balsamic notes and an austere elegance that takes it away from the obvious. It does not seek to seduce with exuberant fruit, but with depth and authenticity. A wine for those who value history, risk and the purest expression of a forgotten terroir.
