Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2019 Reserva, sold as Crianza in Spain, comes from a dry and warm year with low yields and concentrated wines. The grapes from the Haro zone, the four from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and 80% of the volume matured in French oak and the rest in Centro European and American oak, 20% of them new, for 22 months, during which time the wine was racked every eight to nine months. This is serious and young but balanced, nuanced and complex. They are shortening the time in oak, as they feel they have better and younger barrels and think the wines need less time in oak and more time in bottle. This is very Muga, very Rioja and very good. They produced an impressive 960,000 bottles and 18,000 magnums of this. There is only one master blend that is bottled at different times. I tasted a bottle that was filled in April 2022 (because of the lack of availability of bottles!).
Muga Reserva Selección Especial is a red wine that perfectly integrates the past and the future. It has been made with Tempranillo grapes and a small percentage of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano.
The grapes come from a vineyard that has been in operation for 35 years and is located on tertiary clay-limestone terraces on the slopes of the Obarenes Mountains and Sierra Cantabria, located in the northwest corner of La Rioja. These characteristics make it an exceptional soil for the grapes to be exquisite!
The grapes are harvested and selected by hand in the vineyard. In the winery, it is fermented with indigenous yeast in oak vats.
The wine is aged for 26 months in French oak barrels selected from the best cooperage.
Before bottling, the wine is lightly clarified with fresh egg whites. After bottling, it undergoes a refinement process for at least 18 months in the cellar.
Muga Reserva Selección Especial shows a fruity character and an intriguing blend of very diverse aromas. It exhibits fantastic acidity, as well as pleasant hints of coffee.
A succulent red wine with a silky palate that evolves elegantly in the bottle.
Muga Reserva Selección Especial is probably the most gastronomic of Muga's red wines. It surprisingly integrates the past and the future. It takes from classic wines their capacity for evolution, complexity and elegance.
On the other hand, its modern touches are evident with its exquisite fruity aroma and its fresh and spicy touches, typical of modern wines.
Gastronomically it goes very well with red meats, lamb and all kinds of game dishes.
And you, haven't you tried this exquisite wine yet? Try it and tell us what you think!
