Description
Merry Edwards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir stems from the vision of a determined winemaker who realised very early on that Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir could combine depth, freshness and an elegance distinctly influenced by the ocean. After years of building a reputation in California, Merry Edwards founded her project with a very clear vision: to produce wines true to the vineyard, crafted with respect for the land and through sustainable viticulture that would allow every nuance of the landscape to be expressed. This wine, made from 100% Pinot Noir, epitomises that philosophy. It comes from the Sonoma Coast AVA, a region influenced by its proximity to the Pacific, persistent fog and moderate temperatures that prolong ripening. The diverse soils and cool climate lend the wine a vibrant, precise and deeply gastronomic character.
Production
The production of Merry Edwards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir begins with hand-harvesting and careful selection of the grapes. The bunches are completely destemmed, whilst keeping the berries whole to preserve aromatic purity and texture. This is followed by a seven-day cold maceration, which is key to extracting colour, aroma and finesse without hardening the wine’s profile. Fermentation is carried out with precision to preserve the fruit’s identity and, once complete, the wine is aged for nine months in French oak barrels, some of which are new. Finally, it is bottled, seeking a balance between structure, subtlety and varietal expression.
Taste
In the glass, Merry Edwards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir offers a seductive and refined nose, with notes of cherryand wildstrawberry, enveloped in delicate hints of vanilla, cedar, violets and white pepper. On the palate, it is silky at first, but quickly reveals tension and energy. Ripe red fruit glides across the palate with juiciness, whilst fresh acidity and a hint of blood orange lend it vigour and length. The finish is clean, persistent and elegant, with that balance of fruit, freshness and texture that defines a great Californian Pinot Noir.
