Description
In an untamed corner of Roussillon, between the rugged Calce soils and the Mediterranean breezes, Tom Lubbe has built much more than a winery: he has forged an oenological manifesto. Domaine Matassa was born out of a desire to work in communion with the land, without imposing anything, and that philosophy has guided every decision since Tom, a New Zealander raised in South Africa, settled in France and adopted the shale, limestone and clay slopes of this rugged region as his home. Matassa Tommy Ferriol is both a tribute to Mas Ferriol, the vineyard from which this cuvée originates, and a nod to the free spirit that defines Matassa. Made with 60% Syrah and 40% Muscat Petit Grains, this wine is the result of one of those decisions that only convinced radicals make: co-fermenting red and aromatic grapes to seek not the power, but the most luminous and ethereal expression of the terroir.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, in small crates, selecting healthy and perfectly ripe bunches. Once in the winery, the grapes are vatted whole and ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The maceration, just two weeks, is just enough to extract the essence without compromising delicacy. No sulphur is used at any stage of the process and the wine is neither clarified nor filtered. Ageing is short, in order to preserve freshness, and is carried out in stainless steel tanks for 9 months. The result is a raw and direct work, a wine without make-up.
Taste
Matassa Tommy Ferriol opens like a whisper of wild red fruits: redcurrant, raspberry, strawberry juice. But in the background there are notes of undergrowth, a hint of resin and balsamic herbs that add depth. The Muscat Petit Grains introduces a perfumed thread, almost imperceptible but decisive, which elevates the whole and makes it vibrate on a different frequency. In the mouth it is light, almost floating, but with an internal tension that pushes it long and firm towards the finish. The tannin is barely a whisper, the acidity clean as a morning breeze. More than a wine, a fugitive impression, a sensory postcard of the wildest Roussillon.
