Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The NV Moscatel Superior Emilin, produced from Moscatel grapes sourced from Las Cruces vineyard in Chipiona, basically the only place that still grows Moscatel grapes, which has very sandy soil. Legend is that there are some pre-phyloxera vines there... This wine is also quite dark for its age, and has the telltale Moscatel profile of candied orange, honeysuckle and sweet Muscat grapy notes. They do not dehydrate the grapes, they wait and harvest them very late, with some overripeness. With some time it surprises me because it ends up smelling of cola sweets. Drink 2013-2020.

Description
A salty breeze seems to whisper the story behind Lustau Moscatel Emilín. It was all born out of the determination of a century-old bodega, Emilia, to preserve the heritage of the most authentic Jerez. In the "Las Cruces" estate, bordered by the Atlantic mist of Chipiona, the Moscatel vines grow caressed by the sea winds and on sandy soils that retain freshness and filter the light of Cádiz. It was there, decades ago, that a courageous decision was taken: to allow the grapes to over-ripen on the vine in order to achieve a natural sweetness without resorting to external additions. Thus was born Lustau Moscatel Emilín, a wine that pays homage to patience, to the land and to the unique expression of the Moscatel grape in a land of albariza and sand. A wine that does not seek to be modern or complacent, but true to itself and to its origin: sweet, yes, but never submissive.
Winemaking
The Lustau Moscatel Emilín is harvested late, when the grapes have reached their maximum concentration. Fermentation is stopped naturally, preserving the residual sugars typical of the variety. Then, Lustau Moscatel Emilín is aged using the traditional system of soleras and criaderas, ageing for eight years in American oak casks that have previously contained Jerez wines. This long oxidative ageing, in the humid cellars of Jerez de la Frontera, allows the wine to gain depth, complexity and that balance so characteristic of the great Moscatels from the south.
Taste
Dark mahogany in colour with iodine reflections, the Lustau Moscatel Emilín is dense and bright in the glass, anticipating an enveloping experience. The nose is lush and complex: dried figs, sultanas, candied orange peel and dates intertwine with notes of wilted white flowers, thick honey and a spicy hint of clove and nutmeg. There are also echoes of roasted coffee, caramel and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is unctuous but not heavy: the entry is silky, almost liqueur-like, with a deep sweetness that is never cloying thanks to a surprising acidity that lifts and balances the whole. Dried fruits, raisined fruits, toffee, notes of old wood and a final salinity that gives it tension and persistence. The aftertaste is long, warm, spicy and slightly bitter, like the peel of a sun-dried orange. A dessert wine, yes, but also a meditation wine; ideal with blue cheeses, foie, or simply on its own, as the perfect end to a slow meal. A sherry jewel, sweet in soul but austere in spirit.
