Description

Louis Latour stems from a deeply Burgundian vision: to let the vineyard speak for itself. At a historic estate such as Louis Latour, founded in 1797, this wine is not seen as merely a prestigious red wine, but as a faithful expression of one of Burgundy’s great vineyards. Louis Latour Echézeaux Grand Cru, made exclusively from Pinot Noir, comes from the Echézeaux Grand Cru, situated between Vosne Romanée and Vougeot, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where the soils of clay, limestone and gravel, combined with the east-facing aspect, imbue the wine with a blend of depth, tension and refinement. The winery has maintained an almost obsessive commitment to precision, even going so far as to maintain its own cooperage – an unusual decision that reveals just how much every detail matters.

Winemaking

The harvest for Louis Latour Echézeaux Grand Cruis carried out by hand, with careful selection of the bunches to preserve the purity of the fruit. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in the traditional manner in open vats, followed by full malolactic fermentation to round out the texture without losing its edge. It is then aged for between 10 and 12 months in new, medium-toasted French oak barrels. This ageing process does not seek to mask the terroir, but rather to give the wine structure, depth and ageing potential. Bottling marks the culmination of a classic, precise and uncompromising process, designed to honour the nobility of the vineyard.

Taste

On the nose, Louis Latour Echézeaux Grand Cru displays a restrained yet intensely noble character: black cherry, sour cherry, a delicate hint of menthol, fine vanilla and an earthy, spicy undertone. On the palate, it is full-bodied, silky and firm, with ripe red fruit, notes of morello cherry and very fine-grained tannins. The oak is well-integrated, contributing toasty nuances and a slight hint of mocha. The finish is long, elegant and serene, with that thrilling combination of power and silkiness that distinguishes a great Burgundy Pinot Noir.
