Description
The story of José Pariente Finca Las Comas begins with an intimate look at the land where he was born. Bodega José Pariente, located in the heart of Rueda, has been honing the art of Verdejo for generations, but this particular plot -LasComas-was something more: a sort of family secret. A tiny estate, barely 2 hectares in size, planted more than 70 years ago in goblet-trained vines on a poor, stony, pebbly soil with a clay-limestone subsoil, which for years was vinified in silence, like a hidden treasure. It was the audacity of Victoria Pariente, daughter of the founder, who decided to bottle it separately, challenging the idea that Rueda should be young, fresh and simple. In Las Comas she found not only identity, but depth.
The continental climate of the area, with harsh winters and summers of extreme thermal contrasts, marks the grapes with fire, giving them a concentration and tension that is uncommon in the Rueda DO. This Verdejo is unlike any other: it has more than freshness; it has character. It is a wine that speaks of its place with a dry, mineral, serious voice.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with a rigorous selection in the vineyard. After a delicate destemming, the grapes are cooled to preserve their aromatic integrity. Fermentation of José Pariente Finca Las Comas takes place spontaneously, exclusively with indigenous yeasts, in 500-litre French oak barrels, where it is also aged on the lees for approximately 11 months. No forced bâtonnage, allowing the wine to breathe, settle, and evolve with the calm that its origin demands. The wine is bottled without fining, with a slight filtration, seeking to maintain all the primary expression and texture that its long ageing gives it.
Taste
From the very first moment, José Pariente Finca Las Comas opens with a restrained, almost austere note of fresh fennel, lime peel and a raw salinity reminiscent of chalk dust and hot stone after rain. There is some green quince, bay leaf, and a hint of unripe white fruit, such as winter pear or Reineta apple.
The palate is dry, sharp, with an electric tension that sustains throughout. There are no concessions to fruit or sweetness: it is pure nerve, with an incisive acidity and a volume that relies on ageing, not on fat. The finish is very long, saline, with an aftertaste of bitter almonds, grapefruit peel and dried grass. A radical Verdejo, almost Burgundian in its skeleton and texture, but with the soul of the Castilian wasteland.
