Since 1984, the red Gran Caus is the wine that wants to represent the elegance and finesse of the French grape varieties in the Mediterranean conditions of the estate. These varieties have suffered in the last few years, pointing at the need to move on in the varietal composition of the vineyards. The 2022 Gran Caus was produced with 80% Cabernet Franc, a variety that seems to adapt to the conditions better than the Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot. It has a peppery and spicy nose, with notes of nutmeg, black peppercorns and some sweet spices. It's medium to full-bodied, with 13.61% alcohol and abundant, slightly dusty tannins. This challenging and unusual year only produced 5,000 bottles, and it's why the blend is also very unusual. It's still a bit too young. It matured in 300- and 500-liter barrels for one year. It was bottled in May 2024.

Description
Gran Caus Tinto is a red wine that combines the tradition of the Bordeaux region with the Mediterranean essence of the Garraf massif, Penedés. This wine is the result of the passion and vision of Carlos Esteva, who, being a fervent lover of Bordeaux varieties, decided to go for a Bordeaux coupage, but giving it a unique twist with the Mediterranean character of the Massís del Garraf.
Elaboration
Gran Caus Tinto is made from 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its elaboration process begins with a pre-fermentative maceration, followed by a spontaneous fermentation of the varieties separately at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, a post-fermentative maceration is carried out. Ageing takes place in 225-litre barrels, some new and some 1-2 years old French oak barrels, for a period of 12 months. Finally, the wine remains in the bottle for 6 years, which gives it exceptional maturity and complexity.
Taste
Gran Caus Tinto has an intense ruby red colour. Its nose is complex, with typical varietal aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry and plum. In addition, spicy and balsamic notes can be perceived with a slightly toasted background. On the palate, this wine is silky, fresh and structured, with a bouquet rich in ripe fruit, cedar and undergrowth. The finish is broad and pleasantly long, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.
