Description
Carl Loewen Maximin Herrenberg 1896 Alte Reben was not born out of a commercial idea, but out of an obsession with preserving a piece of living history. At the height of the Gründerzeit era, the winegrower Carl Schmitt-Wagner took an almost reckless decision: to grub up and replant his finest plot with the best Riesling stock he possessed, and to do so in 1896 using ungrafted vines and a staggering density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Years earlier, the Prussian classification had already identified this site as one of the greats of the Mosel; later, its wines even found their way onto the tables of the tsars in St Petersburg. Today, the Carl Loewen winery safeguards this vineyard as a monument: a south-facing slope on red slate (rare in the Mosel), which imparts depth, tension and an unmistakable mineral character. Variety: 100% Riesling. With low yields (around 40 hl/ha), each bunch is a testament to concentration and precision.
Production
The grapes are handled with surgical precision: meticulous selection, gentle pressing and a process designed not to mask the vineyard’s character. In Carl Loewen Maximin Herrenberg 1896 Alte Reben, fermentation seeks purity and transparency, and ageing takes place in neutral vessels, often old barrels, to develop texture without imposing flavours. The aim is clear: to preserve the terroir’s character, that cool energy of the slate and the restrained fruit. It is bottled when the wine has found its balance between power and elegance, ready to unfold its layers over time.
Taste
On the nose, Carl Loewen Maximin Herrenberg 1896 Alte Reben first appears as living stone: damp slate, a touch of fresh herbs and subtle spice. Then the spectrum of citrus, grapefruit and lime opens up, with precise yellow fruit: vineyard peach, apricot, even a dark hint of blackcurrant that is surprising in a white. On the palate it shows character: compact, juicy, with a lively acidity that stretches the sip and makes it electric. There is a delicate salinity, mineral texture and a very long, polished finish, leaving echoes of tart apple and bitter citrus. A dry Riesling with a serious yet playful character: it seduces, grips and invites you back for more, an old-school classic with the vigour of an athlete.
