Description
From the very beginning, Artadi Tradición was born as an act of serene rebellion. Faced with the growing standardisation of wine, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle and his team at Artadi decided to create a label that would speak without artifice about the vineyard, the climate and the land. Thus Artadi Tradición was born: without denomination, without corsets, but profoundly Riojan in soul. It comes from old Tempranillo vineyards, cultivated in clay and limestone soils, under a continental climate that marks strong thermal contrasts, refining the slow and concentrated maturity. The story goes that in a particularly scarce vintage, the winery opted to maintain quality by sacrificing production. A gesture true to its philosophy: absolute respect for the character of the terroir, even if it meant losing litres along the way.
Winemaking
The Artadi Tradición grapes are harvested by hand after a meticulous selection process, and the berries are transported in 10-kilo crates to the winery to preserve their integrity. There, Artadi Tradición is made as a tribute to the traditional method of the town of Laguardia. First, the grapes undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration for one or two days. Subsequently, they are fermented for a maximum of 12 days with a light pumping-over and two daily hand treadings. This artisanal approach seeks a delicate extraction, prioritising respect for the fruit and the expression of the terroir. No aggressive fining or intense filtration is applied, allowing the wine to retain all its authenticity and natural texture.
Taste
Visually, Artadi Tradición is a bright, medium cherry red. On the nose, it displays a palette dominated by fresh red fruit -cherry, raspberry- along with subtle hints of dried grass, wild blackberries and a mineral background reminiscent of damp earth. When oxygenated, light notes of spice emerge - clove, pepper - and a barely perceptible echo of smoky wood. The palate is juicy, with lively but integrated tannins, good tension and an acidity that refreshes without attacking. The finish is dry, elegant, with hints of red fruit, liquorice and a hint of mineral salinity. It has nerve, authenticity and a structure that makes it ideal for pairing with white meats, mushrooms or traditional Rioja dishes. Artadi Tradición is, as its name suggests, a sober but vibrant tribute to the essentials.
