Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
I tasted a super bottle of the 2023 Alberto Nanclares, which this year is quite gentle, with lower alcohol, 12.2%, and lower acidity but a slightly higher pH to achieve the balance, which to me is more fragile and ethereal. They used their own grapes, with a mixed fermentation in stainless steel and oak and matured with lees for nine months. 3,064 bottles and 50 magnums produced. It was bottled in August 2024. This is sold without appellation of origin.

Description
In the heart of the Val do Salnés, where the Atlantic mists mingle with the aromas of salt and granite, Alberto Nanclares began his journey with no commercial pretensions, just the desire to understand and care for an old vineyard that surrounded his house in Cambados. Over time, and together with Silvia Prieto, his project took shape under a clear philosophy: minimum intervention, maximum expression of the place. They were ahead of their time, opting for organic viticulture when few others were doing so, convinced that only in this way could Albariño speak with clarity and authenticity.
Nanclares y Prieto Nanclares Prieto Albariño is born from 10 plots worked by hand, distributed between Cambados, Ribadumia and Portas. The vines, aged between 15 and 95 years, grow on decomposed granite soils, poor but vibrant, which imprint an austere and precise minerality. The Atlantic climate, cool and humid, with strong marine influences, is key to maintaining the natural acidity and freshness that defines this pure expression of Albariño.
Winemaking
The grapes that give life to Nanclares and Nanclares Prieto Albariño are harvested by hand and gently pressed, without destemming, in a pneumatic press. Fermentation is spontaneous, without additives, divided between stainless steel (73%) and used French oak barrels (27%), seeking tension and depth. The wine rests for 9 months on its lees, with weekly bâtonnage during the first three months. It is bottled without fining or stabilisation, with light filtration and minimal SO₂. A measured and respectful process, which lets the grapes and the soil speak with authenticity.
Taste
The nose of Nanclares y Prieto Nanclares Prieto Albariño is subtle and direct, marked by an enveloping saline minerality. Notes of tense citrus - grapefruit, lime peel -, hints of fresh herbs, green almond and wet stone appear. On the palate, the wine is straight, sharp as a scalpel, with vibrant acidity that carries flavours through to a long, clean, dry finish. The texture is serious, with restrained volume and a lingering salinity that makes it an ideal partner for raw seafood or Atlantic fish. It is an Albariño without make-up: pure, precise, profoundly Galician.
