Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The new white 2024 Nanclares y Prieto Viño Branco was produced with Albariño from 76 different vineyards in the Salnés and Condado. It fermented with indigenous yeasts after pressing the full clusters and matured with lees for eight months. It's very pale and young but already showing the harmony, balance and nuance of the very challenging 2024 vintage. It's clean, precise, mineral and elegant, with a gentle and soft finish, coming through as completely balanced in all senses. It has 12.8% alcohol, a pH of 3.45 and 7.4 grams of acidity. I think this is a noteworthy addition to the portfolio. 13,854 bottles and 200 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2025.

Features

Description

Alberto Nanclares did not inherit vineyards, he chose them. An economist by training, he left his career to embrace a life rooted in the Galician Atlantic. His winery, together with Silvia Prieto, is today a reference of a radically honest viticulture in Rías Baixas. They work 2.5 hectares divided into 12 micro-plots between Castrelo, Vilariño and Padrenda, with 30 to 60-year-old vines planted in granitic and sandy soils. The pergola training, the use of marine compost and no tillage reflect their philosophy: minimum intervention, maximum respect for the ecosystem. Atlantic climate, saline fog, and harvests adjusted to the purest expression of the Albariño.

Winemaking

Nanclares Prieto Viño Branco is a choral wine: it comes from 76 different plots between Salnés and Condado. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented separately with indigenous yeasts. The ageing was divided between an old French oak vat and small stainless steel tanks, always with its lees, for eight months. Bottled without fining or filtration, with very low sulphur content. A wine that speaks more of landscape than of technique.

Taste

Pale, almost transparent, Nanclares Prieto Viño Branco is quiet but clear. On the nose, notes of lime zest, wet granite, dried flowers and an Atlantic salinity. Nothing is obvious. On the palate, the acidity is vibrant but perfectly integrated; the wine glides with tension, fine texture, and a finish that slowly ebbs away like a low tide. No lush fruit, just suggestions: a slight bitterness of green almond, a hint of dried manzanilla. Minimalist, sharp, deeply Atlantic. Nanclares Prieto Viño Branco is a mineral Albariño, which moves away from the tropical cliché and approaches the minerality of a great Chablis or a dry Riesling from the Mosel. A cult white, for those who seek authenticity without concessions.
