Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Alma de Mar is Albariño from a vineyard that was planted in the 1980s, 0.3 hectares on granite soils with some clay. This is the only white where they work the lees with bâtonnage, 100% in stainless steel for eight months. It's subtly smoky and leesy, with ripe yellow fruit and a moderate 13% alcohol for a very warm and dry year, keeping the balance and poise, with a pH of 3.36 and six grams of acidity. It has a round palate and a sense of elegance and harmony that is remarkable for the year. 2,666 bottles were filled in November 2023.

Description
Albamar Alma de Mar is a single varietal Albariño from singular vineyards located in the subzone of O Salnés, in the Rías Baixas DO, Galicia. This wine is a project of Xurxo Alba Padín, who, with a family tradition of decades in viticulture, began bottling and marketing the wines of the Albamar winery in 2006. The grapes come from vines about 40 years old, planted at the mouth of the Umía River, just a few metres from the Atlantic Ocean, which gives the wine its characteristic saline and mineral touch. The winery manages some 2.5 hectares of its own vineyards and supplements this with grapes from local growers, always using organic and environmentally friendly cultivation techniques.
The soil on which the vines grow is granitic, a type of soil that contributes to the freshness and mineral nuances of this wine. This particularity of the soil, together with the Atlantic climate, gives a unique and distinctive profile to the Albariño Alma de Mar.
Winemaking
The winemaking process of Albamar Alma de Mar begins with a manual harvest to preserve the quality and health of the grapes. Fermentation is spontaneous, carried out with indigenous yeasts present in the vineyard itself, which helps to faithfully express the terroir of O Salnés. After fermentation, the wine is aged on the lees for approximately eight months in stainless steel tanks. During this ageing, a regular bâtonnage process (movement of the fine lees) is carried out, which increases the structure and volume in the mouth, without losing the characteristic freshness of Albariño. The wine does not undergo fining and is only lightly filtered before bottling, with a minimum use of sulphites, in order to maintain the purity and natural expression of the grapes.
Taste
Albamar Alma de Mar exhibits a deep and complex aromatic profile, with notes of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, as well as citrus nuances such as orange peel and quince. On the palate, it has an enveloping texture and an excellent balance between acidity and volume, provided by its long ageing on lees. The saline touch, characteristic of its Atlantic origin, adds a unique dimension to the wine, while its minerality remains present throughout the tasting. The finish is long, persistent and clean, leaving a memory of freshness and a lively acidity that invites further enjoyment.
