I found quite ripe aromas in the nose of the 2019 A Torna dos Pasás Escolma and also hints of evolution, a bit more oxidative. It has flavors of raisins and some dusty tannins. It has 13.5% alcohol, a bit too ripe for me. Ready now. 1,800 bottles and some larger formats were bottled in February 2021.

Description

To speak of Luis Anxo Rodríguez is to speak of tradition, passion and, above all, respect for the land. This small producer from the Ribeiro DO in Galicia has dedicated his life to recovering native varieties and making wines that reflect the authenticity of their origin. With just six hectares divided into multiple micro-plots in Arnoia, he works with vineyards between 10 and 50 years old, many of them planted by himself. The soul of this wine is nourished by decomposed granite soils with a sandy cover, which bring freshness and elegance to every sip.

Winemaking

A Torna Dos Pasás Escolma is a tribute to patience and know-how. It is made from a blend of Brancellao (55%), Caíño Redondo, Caíño Longo and Ferrol, all native varieties that give life to this very special wine. Harvesting is done by hand, ensuring that only the best grapes reach the winery. There, 30% of the bunches are left whole before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasts between three and four weeks, allowing the full expressiveness of the fruit to be extracted.
Ageing is a slow process. 12 months in 300-litre French oak barrels (with just 10% new wood) refines the structure without dominating the wine's character. After this, it rests for three years in the bottle before being released onto the market. Without fining or filtering, each bottle is a true expression of the vineyard and time.

Taste

If Ribeiro had a liquid soul, it would taste something very similar to A Torna Dos Pasás Escolma. Its cherry red colour already hints at the intensity it holds inside. On the nose, the first sensation is of ripe red and black fruits, with a floral touch reminiscent of violets. Then more complex notes appear: black olives, a slight spicy touch and an earthy background, almost as if we were transported to the slopes of Arnoia.
The palate is where it really comes alive. The texture is silky, with polished tannins that envelop the palate with elegance. Despite its structure, it maintains a vibrant acidity, making it fresh and balanced. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a spicy and mineral aftertaste that invites further drinking. It is one of those wines that evolves in the glass, revealing new facets with each sip.
To accompany it, nothing better than grilled red meats, small game or a good cured cheese. But if you want something simpler, a traditional stew will also make it shine. Because, in the end, this wine is not just a drink; it is a bottled story that deserves to be enjoyed at leisure.
