Buy Wine from Château Cheval Blanc Terrazas de los Andes
Cheval des Andes, known as the Grand Cru of the Andes, is the fruit of a collaboration between Château Cheval Blanc, Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" from Saint Emilion, Bordeaux, and Terrazas de los Andes, a pioneer in the production of high altitude wines in cool climates of Argentina. This winery is at the heart of the tradition and heritage handed down by Château Cheval Blanc, a legacy that has travelled across generations and continents from Bordeaux to Mendoza.
Vineyards
Cheval des Andes produces its wines from two exclusive high altitude vineyards: Las Compuertas, in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza's oldest and most classic wine region, and La Consulta, in the prestigious Uco Valley. These vineyards cover a total of 50 hectares.
Las Compuertas is located at an altitude of 1070 metres, with alluvial and silt loam soils composed of sand (36%), limestone (45%) and clay (16%). These soils, together with a unique microclimate, contribute to the minerality of the wines.
On the other hand, La Consulta is situated at an altitude of 1100 metres, with alluvial soils composed of sand (60%), clay (10%) and limestone (30%). These soils offer a natural drainage that benefits the health of the vines.
Philosophy
The Cheval des Andes production team seeks to achieve the most elegant expression of the terroir in each vintage. The winery inherits its precision viticulture from Terrazas de los Andes, growing, harvesting and vinifying each sub-plot separately to optimise the expression of terroir. The art of blending is essential, and the winemaking teams at Cheval des Andes and Château Cheval Blanc collaborate closely in this process. The resulting wine is aged for 16 to 18 months in selected Bordeaux barrels, either French or Austrian oak.
The team is led by Pierre Lurton, president of Château Cheval Blanc and Cheval des Andes, Pierre-Olivier Clouet, technical director of Château Cheval Blanc, and Gerald Gabillet, technical director of Cheval des Andes. Together, they work with passion and dedication to produce wines that reflect the essence and character of the Mendoza terroir.
